Family Affair

Image
I wanted to share with you a photo I received this week from the team in Vietnam.   This is a group photo of some children and their parents after receiving surgery in Ha Giang province.  I had the pleasure of meeting each of these families earlier this year. It touched me to see the kids again this time in their hospital gowns starting a new chapter in their lives.  This represents a small sample of the over 720 children who received life changing surgeries this year through the program.   On behalf of the families I wanted to thank each of you for your generosity and support.   Collectively, we are making a big impact on so many lives .

Amazing Results: I can walk!

Image
Hi Team, Our team in Vietnam is currently in the process of performing surgeries on the children that we scheduled just a few months ago when I was in Vietnam.    It's so rewarding to receive before and after photos from the surgical team of the children I had the privilege to meet.     Today, I would like to feature a young boy named "Sing".  Sing came to the clinic with a severe case of clubfoot that should have been treated years ago.   Because of Sing's condition he was unable to walk unassisted.   As you will see in the video Sing had to walk on his ankles leaving no stability so he always needed something to support him.  The attached video shows Ping before his operation, the operation, physical therapy journey and end results.   In just 4 months Ping has made amazing progress and is now walking on his own unassisted.   We are confident that over the next few months as Ping builds up his strength ...

2024 Preview

Image
Quick update to give you a preview of our 2024 journey back to Vietnam.   In 2024 we will be part of the Surgical phase of the program.   During this phase we will return to the poorest most remote areas of Vietnam with a team of specialty surgeons from Hanoi to perform surgery for the children.   Because of the variety of conditions to address typically the team of specialist will include Orthopedics, Plastic, Optometrist and E&T surgeons.  The Surgery phase takes place for 3 months (May-July) and the team performs 20-30 surgeries a day. I have been receiving photos from the team who are doing the surgeries now on the children we screened a few months ago.  So nice to see photos of the children we meet getting these life changing procedures.  Like the young boy Sang pictured below.  These are photos of him before and after the cleft lip operation.  In a few weeks he will have his sutures removed and with a few months of healing his lip w...

2023 Screening Recap

Image
Quick update on the success of our 2023 Screening.   As you may know during the first few months of the year we travel to the poorest, most remote areas of Vietnam to screen the children for surgery (Feb-May).  During the screening we evaluate and schedule the babies for surgery or recommend other treatments.  After the screening phase we return to the same locations with a team of specialty surgeons from Hanoi to perform the operations (May-August). During our screening this year we evaluated 2,223 patients.   Of the 2,223 patients evaluated 905 will soon have surgery or other treatments.  People may ask Why only 50% receive surgery?: Many of the babies evaluated are babies who had surgery last year as follow-up assessment is critical to the success of the program.  We need to ensure the surgery was successful and the child is thriving.   There are also conditions that it is best to wait for body development prior to surgery.   Some ...

National Eye Institute Partnership

Image
Hi Team  It's been a few months since my last post.   Since returning from Vietnam in May I have adjusted back into my normal routine here at home.  I have been working on a goal of mine to establish Child Surgery Vietnam as an official Charitable organization here in the US.   Stay tuned for more news on that soon.   For now I am happy to announce that we have entered into a partnership with the National Eye Institute in Hanoi which will help provide surgeries for as many as 400 children with Strabismus. The most common form of strabismus is known as "crossed eyes." Strabismus appears to have a genetic component.  In addition, children with brain disorders, such as cerebral palsy or are also more likely to have strabismus.  Through our partnership the National Eye Institute will now be able to providing corrective surgery to as many as 400 children to restore their sight.

5/6-7/23 Ha Tinh Province Clinic

Image
We closed out the 2023 screening in the Ha Tinh Province.  Ha Tinh is located in Central Vietnam approximately 300 km south of Hanoi.  This province was unique in that we held the screenings at a Private Hospital TTH.  There is a growing trend of private hospitals in Vietnam which are for profit facilities offering full line services with a focus on patient service and state of art equipment.   Our 2 days of clinic were very busy screening over 300 children.
