What the Pho?
Everyone knows that Vietnam is known for the delicious dish called Pho. Pho is a soup dish with beef, chicken or vegetable broth. The best Pho I have ever had in Hanoi is from a small shop in the Old Quarter that was recommended to me 6 years ago. No one speaks English but every year when I return to Hanoi they remember me and treat me like family.
A bit about the shop. If you did not know it you would never think it was a Pho shop. The sign on the shop is Shell Advance, like Shell Motor Oil. (see photo). This is because in the afternoon the space is used as a motorbike repair shop by the owner’s son. Multi use of space is common in Vietnam and the owners often live in the same building. The same space that is used to sell Pho in the morning, repair motorbikes in the afternoon becomes the family's living room at night. The owner of the shop who you will always find sitting at her serving station preparing the Pho has been doing this for 37 years. The only serve one dish Pho Bo and boy is it good. A hardy bowl of Pho for breakfast will set you back $1.50. If you are ever in Hanoi, it’s a must try. Let me know if you need the address of Shell Advance, the best Pho in Hanoi.
